The History of Kelehans

A Galway Tradition Since 1902, where the Heart of Bushypark Beats

The history of Kelehans Bar in Galway stretches back to at least 1902. Census records of that year tell us it was run by Mary Anne Kelehan, a widow, and her children a family of publicans. Kelehans pub in Bushypark was a central community hub, the only place for miles to find refreshment and good company, especially on market days.

The Kelehans family was well-respected, known for their generosity towards the villagers in times of need. The pub even housed the only village phone, vital for essential communications.

Over the years, Kelehans has kept its role as a key social gathering place. Discover its legacy and countless stories in the recently published book “Bushypark, Our People – Our Place, A Parish History” by Christy Kelly. This book offers a rich exploration of the area’s history, people, and culture.
